Sasha: The Escape Cat – Short Film

2020

Krita, Adobe Animate

Sasha: The Escape Cat is my senior capstone project. I planned the story, created storyboards, animated, and edited the entire short film over the course of sixteen weeks.

I didn’t want to use royalty-free stock music, so I hired the talented composer Vladislav Savvateev to create a soundtrack for it.

The project was entirely drawn and animated in Krita (with the exception of the title sequence and the closing zoom, which were done in Adobe: Animate). Editing was done in Adobe Premiere.

Workflow

The assignment for this project was to design the look of Richmond Art Museum’s outreach van. The van had to be in-keeping with RAM’s existing branding, but also had to be distinct, iconic, and have a fun flair for kids since the van would be visiting schools.

I started off by printing some images of a Ford Transit van and used colored pencils to sketch out ideas of how RAM's color palate could interact with the van's design. Initially I wasn't sure if we were going to have a new logo or just use their existing logo.
Once it was decided that having a unique logo for this project would be ideal I started sketching ideas for logos. Some of them ended up being too clunky or random. The new logo had to be something that built upon their existing logo and integrated well with it.
Sometimes an idea looks better in your head than in execution. I really liked the idea of the little vans driving up the side of the logo in the sixth picture, but it just became too much detail.
After narrowing the options down to a couple contenders, my team decided the paint splatter logo looked best. I actually intended it to be rays of light in the sketches, but paint splatters worked better with the theme of the project. So I created that logo as a vector graphic in Adobe Illustrator.
After creating the logo, I created concept art of what the van might look like with the logo on the side using promo photos of the Ford Transit van. I knew all of these details wouldn't make it onto the final van (like the colored hubcaps), but I wanted the mock-up to be as striking as possible.
About 8 months after I created the logo, I received an email from the education director of Richmond Art Museum asking if it was okay to use the logo on their final van. I always assumed they'd redesign it, but I was pleasantly surprised they wanted to use the exact design I created.

Video Game Poster

This project was a collaboration with fellow student Andrea Simpson (whose portfolio can be viewed at https://andreaksimpson.com/). The assignment was to create a poster for a fictional video game. We decided it would be funny to create a game where the concept is that killer food tries to eat people instead of the other way around. I was in charge of creating character designs for the poster, and Andrea did the backgrounds, poster layout, and the cupcake boss villain.

I started off by doing a bunch of sketches of anthropomorphic food. I had several pages of these sort of designs, and we had to narrow it down to about five.
After deciding which foods would be the final characters I drew them in Adobe Photoshop. I made sure to keep the weapons separate so they could be posed without them, if needed. I left the chef's face (who's supposed to be the player character) blank so we could put our faces in there.
After we both completed our parts of the project we combined them together to make the final poster.

The goal of this project was to create a logo for MC Leather Smithing. My client wanted a design that featured a leather cutting knife and his initials. He wanted me to do something in red and grey.

I started off by sketching several concepts, all based on a rough sketch he sent me (which looked pretty close to the ones on the top row. I made sure to number them so he could easily identify which one he wanted to go with. He liked the one with the crossed knives (#8), so I started working with that.
I added color and gave him various fonts to choose from. He liked the western-style font and script font, and he asked if we could incorporate both (western for the initials and script for the words "leather smithing").
After finalizing the fonts, colors, and design I added a bit of shading to the handle and asked my client which he preferred. He couldn't really tell the difference, so I gave him the one with shading because I thought it had a bit more depth.
